Things you need to know about planting zones.

No matter if this is your first year gardening or if you have been gardening for years being familiar with planting zones is essential to your garden being a success. Why is knowing about planting zones so important? If you are well aware of planting zones you will be able to select the proper plants for your zone and not choose things that will not grow well in your particular climate.

There are a total of eleven different growing zones in the United States. The United States and the southern parts of Canada are separated into USDA plant hardiness zones. There is normally about ten degrees difference between each of the planting zones. Planting zones are decided by the average low temperature of the area so the colder the location the smaller the zone numberThe zone that your area is in is not a growing restriction that tells you want you can grow in your area. It is however a good indicator as to what is going to grow the best in the area that you live in. With a little extra special care you can successfully grow a plant that is classified in a different planting zone in the planting zone that you happen to live in.

You will be able to get some very useful information from seed dealers and greenhouses as to what varieties of flowers and vegetables are going to perform the best in your planting zone. You should keep in mind what type of soil and what amount of sunlight that your plants will need for your garden to be successful. You also need to pay close attention to the coldest weather that the plant can handle.

It is very simple to determine the warmest and coolest planting areas around your home. All you need to do is walk around your home and pay close attention to where the sun hits your home. These areas of your home are referred to as microclimates and these are the places that you will most likely to be able to successfully plant something that is outside of your designated climate zone. A longer planting time is another excellent benefit to microclimates.

If you want to be a master gardener you need to educate yourself on planting zones and what plants will grow best where. This way you will be able to select that flowers, trees and vegetables that will perform the best in your planting zone.
